2. Why charcoal?
Charcoal has an immediacy and a flexibility that can
help in producing the unexpected or unpredictable result.
Thick charcoal is likely to be new or challenging to most students. It's
uses and qualities have to be picked up through trial and error. Some
students are likely to prefer pencil, it gives them an easier life- its
uses and limitations are narrower and more clear-cut.
Charcoal drawings have a material quality or physical presence that pencil
drawings lack. I suppose charcoal is half way between pencil and paint.
