If the sole function of drawing were to produce a sort
of photocopy then this kind of accuracy would be vital.
Any drawing is the record of the artist's involvement or dialogue with
a subject; what is felt to be important by the artist is emphasized, what
is felt as unimportant is left out.
We all know roughly the kind of proportions that the human body has. Some
drawings have these proportions perfectly and are successful; other drawings
have these proportions perfectly and are less so.
Truthfulness to a feeling, a moment or an idea does not entirely depend
upon correctness, when you look at an artwork that strikes some kind of
chord with you that feeling of reality cannot be measured with a ruler
or even adequately described in words. Plenty of drawings feel right but
then seem a little strange when you look into them, these drawings are
about a subject but they also have their own personality independent of
that subject.
